The conference this year will be held on the grounds of the National University of Ireland, Galway, in conjunction with An Cumann Staire, on the weekend of the 19th – 21st February, 2016. So save that weekend, please!
Each year's hosts try to build on the success of the many preceding years and we are very aware of the great responsibilty, and honour, we have been handed to keep the flame burning bright for this very long-running and inclusive student conference. The conference should prove to be a roaring success with the ideas we have coming on stream, the advances in technology and research that makes them possible and as always with the fantastic standard of research evident in the 3rd Level Institutions both in and outside the island of Ireland.

This year promises to be a momentous year for the study of Irish history, with 20th century historians commemorating the centenary of the Battle of the Somme and the Easter Rising of 1916, whilst our colleagues of an earlier vintage look toward the Battle of Hastings in 1066, the death of Maurice FitzGerald, 1st Earl of Desmond in 1356 and the formal declaration of the Seven Years War in 1756. For more recent historians, there is the very recent 30th anniversary of the Chernobyl Disaster in 1986. The IHSA does not favour papers from one historical period over another and invites papers covering all periods of historical research.
The Wordpress blog will serve as a medium not only for us to communicate with you regarding the Call For Papers and other official matters, but it is envisaged will also allow for a less formal, more collegial conversation to emerge. To that end I am delighted to announce that our Vice-Chair, Martin O Donoghue, has agreed to write a blog too. Martin’s work will cover not only the planning and running of the conference behind the scenes, but will also touch on aspects of writing abstracts and papers, research difficulties, thoughts and opinions on events of historical significance as well as a wide variety of other related matters. I also hope to make contributions here and there and would hope too that our other committee members would contribute to the conversation; this year’s committee has both Undergraduates and Postgraduates as well as non-History students considering presenting a paper for the first time. I’m sure you’ll agree that this will provide us with a rich seam of insight.
